Our Vision and Mission

Our Vision:

The Mounted Patrol Foundation believes that horses and equestrian activities have helped create a vibrant, healthy community in Woodside California and the surrounding area, and  Historically, horses were essential to life in the United States for transportation, work and pleasure. The Mounted Patrol Foundation seeks to honor this legacy by continuing to support, maintain, develop and encourage equestrian facilities, activities and heritage in the town of Woodside, the county of San Mateo and the state of California.  Our vision also includes the preservation of horse habitats and trail systems to provide both opportunities and environments conducive to the enjoyment of horses for horse owners and the public at large.

Our Mission and grant record:

The Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), charitable organization that works in collaboration with local government, other public agencies and other non-profits to support and promote equestrian activities and facilities in the area.  The Foundation also serves the fiscal agent for CHAPS - Community Horse Advocacy Program for San Mateo County - and works closely with them to achieve our mutual goals. During the 16 years since our founding, the Mounted Patrol Foundation has made grants totaling over $539,000 to over 40 horse- and equestrian-related organizations, activities, and facilities.

Greer Road Bridge Replacement Sheriff's Activity League Trail Rides for Veterans

This is the bridge at the end of Greer Road, leading into Huddart Park trails,. The trail is called the Kings Mountain Trail. This is a critical bridge for equestrians from South Woodside to access Huddart Park. The alternate route is to ride up the asphalt road and over the vehicle bridge, which can get slippery when wet and is not desirable for safety reasons.

The creek has undermined the footings; the bridge needs to be replaced, with new footings set back from the bank at 8 to 12 feet. The new bridge will be longer than the old one (45 feet vs. 24 feet) and require new beams.

The Mounted Patrol Foundation is working with the Sheriff's Activity League to sponsor horse riding activities at Wunderlich Park, to give an opportunity for youths to experience the joy of horses. Chaparral Ranch is located at Wunderlich Park, and has a number of good trail horses and qualified wranglers that support the program.

A two hour session consists of 1/2 hour of introduction to grooming and saddling a horse, followed by a 1/2 hour training ride in the arena to teach the basics of horsemanship.  The second hour is a trail ride in the beautiful trails of Wunderlich Park. Each session will have 4-6 youth, an adult supervisor and two wranglers.
